OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID

This three day First Aid course trains participants as Occupational First Aiders. There is an exam at the end of this course by an external examiner and successful participants are certified as Occupational First Aiders.

Objectives:
On completion of the course participants will be able to:
• Understand the responsibilities of the occupational first aider
• Be familiar with health and safety legislation on first aid provision in the workplace
• Be able to provide treatment for preserving life or minimising the consequences of injury until the arrival of medical aid
• Be able to provide treatment in the workplace for an injury which does not require the attention of a medical practitioner or nurse
• Be capable of coordinating first aid arrangements in the workplace


Course Program:
Unit 1: First aid in the workplace Role of the Occupational First Aider, legal requirements and how to effectively ensure the safety of the first aider in the workplace.
Unit 2: Patient assessment In this unit students learn how to do a primary and secondary survey on a potential casualty.
Unit 3: Respiratory emergencies Students learn the functions of the respiratory system, management of a choking patient and how to do mouth-to-mouth ventilations.
Unit 4: Cardiac first response This unit teaches the chain of survival - calling for an ambulance, starting CPR and using a Defibrillator effectively.
Unit 5: Wounds and bleeding This module teaches the student how to deal with blood injuries. They will know how to recognise the different types of wounds and know how to treat them.
Unit 6: Altered levels of consciousness This unit covers the treatment of shock and how to do the recovery position. This will allow students to treat a casualty who has lost consciousness.
Unit 7: Musculoskeletal injuries Students will be able to treat patients who have fractured bones, sprains, strains and dislocations.
Unit 8: Burns and scalds, chemicals, electric shock This module covers major and minor burns and causes of burns. It also covers poisoning and electric shock.
